Darren is beginning his tenth year, the first 5 being in San Francisco before moving to New York in 2002. As an educator of both modern & ancient civilizations, and U.S. history & government, Mr. Kawaii has traveled throughout East Asia, concentrating on China, Japan & Korea; and has enjoyed many a road trip across most of North America.

Now starting its third year, the Henry Street School for International Studies hopes to put all the pieces together. By helping to create a small learning community like Henry Street, Darren hopes to satisfy a long-term goal for inner-city children. While the first two years weren’t always easy, they helped him grow as a person and a professional.

Darren received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley and has also studied at the College of San Mateo, San Francisco State University, NYU and Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. While researching emergent immigrant groups in the U.S., Darren was choose as a Martin Luther King jr. Fellow for attempting to bridge the Korean and African American communities. More recently Darren received the MetLife fellowship for teacher research through the Teacher Network Leadership Institute.

Darren’s biggest accomplishments include the last eleven years of marriage and his adorable two-year-old son.
