Melanie Smolev grew up in Baltimore and received her BA in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Michigan. After college, she spent two years teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) in South Korea. She then went on to teach in Baltimore, in Senegal as a Peace Corps Volunteer, and in the Bronx before coming to teach at Henry Street for its inaugural year in 2004. Ms. Smolev received her MA in Teaching English as a Second Language from Teachers College as a Peace Corps Fellow. She teaches 10th grade English Language Arts (ELA) in the form of a Reading and Writing Workshop and Model United Nations and serves as a co-liaison for the student-led Gay Straight Alliance. Ms. Smolev is currently researching increasing student conventionality in writing through the Teachers Network Leadership Institute MetLife Fellowship.
