Henry Street Students Join Tsunami Relief Effort
Henry Street students are working to assist with the relief effort for those affected by the devastating December 26 tsunami in South and Southeast Asia. After learning about the disaster in their classes, the students have pledged to help through two different efforts. First, the students will design and create pillows using materials donated by the Henry Street Settlement. These will be sent to children who survived the tsunami. A message will be created and placed around the border of each pillow.

Henry Street School has also teamed up with Quarters From Kids, an organization established immediately after the tsunami to encourage children across the country to learn about the disaster and raise funds. Henry Street students have set a goal of $1,000, a total of 4,000 quarters! To kick off the effort, the equivalent of one quarter from each student was collected on the first day. Within each homeroom, students planned how they could help—bake sales, donations from local merchants, and loose change collection were all suggested. Students will continue to learn about South and Southeast Asia and the tsunami and will do more research about the relief organizations supported by Quarters From Kids. Once the goal has been reached, all students will vote on which organization will receive the quarters.

More than 100 organizations and relief partners (including Oxfam America, Save the Children and UNICEF) joined together to create and support Quarters From Kids. Former Presidents Bush and Clinton have both announced their support for the initiative.
